Neighborhood in Bloom

A view of the courtyard in full bloom, taken from a condo balcony at Griffin Court.

The past few weeks have seen a sunny change in NYC weather—New Yorkers are abandoning their winter coats and umbrellas in favor of lightweight wear and taking the time to walk around the city instead of taking taxis. Stroll over to Griffin Court and check out the namesake courtyard, which is now in full bloom. With Griffin Court now nearly 70% sold, feel free to make an appointment to see our available condos and learn more about the neighborhood.

Totto Ramen Opening Second Hell’s Kitchen Location

Ramen fans wait in Totto Ramen's notorious line for authentic Japanese food.

The wildly popular neighborhood restaurant Totto Ramen (located at 52nd Street between 8th and 9th Avenues) has announced that they will be opening up a second location in Hell’s Kitchen. Totto Ramen evokes the rustic shops of lunch-hour Japan and serves up some of the most authentic ramen in the city, which has created such a high demand for their expansion. Their new location will be expanding from their Restaurant Row location over to 10th Avenue in the W.50’s, which will make them Griffin Court’s new neighbor! Their second location promises to be bigger than the original. Zagat broke the news Wednesday, and the word has traveled to popular food blogs like Grub Street and Midtown Lunch.

Two Blocks Away: The Armory Show

An art enthusiast considers a painting at The Armory Show

The Armory Show, the largest and most acclaimed of the New York art fairs, was held this past weekend at Piers 92 & 94—only two blocks away from Griffin Court. I went to The Armory Show on Saturday with some friends and was interested to see both the artwork and so many people out enjoying the influential art culture in our neighborhood.

Organized by MoMA, The Armory Show draws thousands of art-world professionals, artists, collectors, curators, students and visitors from across the world every March for the famed four-day art fair. Visitors can mingle with world-class gallery operators and artists, participate in open-discussion panels with leading experts, and see thousands of the best contemporary and modern artworks in the global market all in one place.

Artwork is exhibited in booths by the world’s leading galleries down the length of Piers 92 & 94.
“What is Art Worth Now?”: A panel discussion with art world experts Todd Levine, Victor Weiner, Adam Lindemann, and Alexandra Peers.

Best Pizza in NY found in Hell’s Kitchen

Neighborhood favorite Don Antonio named "Best Pizza" in NYM's Best of New York 2012

New York Magazine has posted their annual “Best of New York” guide this week, and a restaurant in our Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood was name Best Pizza! Only a few blocks from Griffin Court, Don Antonio by Starita serves up authentic, fresh Neapolitan pizza. This pizza joint is newly opened by two pizza greats: Robert Caporuscio and his old mentor Antonio Starita, the owner of one of Naples’ oldest and most respected pizza places. New York Magazine’s 2012 guide sites their well-known montanara pizza as the best reason to go: daily varieties of margherita-style pizza are flash-fried, topped with sharp grated cheese, then lightly browned in a wood-burning oven. You can try the pizza yourself at Don Antonio, located at 309 W.50th near Eighth Avenue.

With the addition of Don Antonio and several new restaurants, cafes and bars along Ninth Avenue, Hell’s Kitchen is earning the reputation as one of the go-to dining destinations in Manhattan. Stay tuned as we keep you posted about the growth in our rising community!

Hell’s Kitchen has a solid foundation

Found an interesting post in the City Room blog at the NYTimes.com today about the geology of Manhattan and what rests under our feet at Griffin Court. Instead of focusing on the architecture this city is known for, the article instead examines what exactly supports the iconic architecture: bedrock. Formed roughly 450 million years ago, these rock outcrops stretch across Midtown and Hell’s Kitchen and can be seen above surface not far from Griffin Court. The children’s playground in DeWitt Clinton Park (at West 52nd Street and 12th Avenue) and Central Park are sites of some of the bedrock that served as the foundation of Manhattan.

Geologists from the American Museum of Natural History state that this bedrock has been critical to urban development in Manhattan over the past century. Since tall buildings had to be anchored on solid bedrock and not the softer glacial till that makes up much of the New York City, the dips and rises in solid bedrock account for the gap between the midtown and downtown skyscrapers in the Manhattan skyline. Good to know Griffin Court has geologically solid footing!
